Understanding the Importance of Effective Onboarding

By Thomas Norris 24 Feb 2020

The processes of onboarding a new staff member into an organisation has long been undervalued, with businesses traditionally viewing the processes to be an administrative formality in the meeting of compliance regulations. However, in more recent times we have seen organisations the world over begin to understand the true value of an effective onboarding process and the key part it plays in creating a happy and productive workforce and positive company culture.

A carefully developed and well delivered onboarding processes provides extensive benefits to both the employee and the organisation alike, including:

      1. Improved Employee Experience

First days can be a daunting experience for any new starter, becoming familiar with a new team of people and performing a new role in an unfamiliar environment.

A successful onboarding procedure can reduce anxieties and make for a smooth initiation to a role by proving the new team member with notable information including reporting lines and relevant staff members, best communication methods and a clear understanding of their expected behaviour. This information gives the new starter confidence in their knowledge of expectations and their place within the team.

      2. Shortened Learning Curve

While a detailed and specific onboarding procedure may result in a delay to a new staff member beginning their new role, the added knowledge received will provide them with a solid framework of understanding on which to build upon and will minimise time taken for them to begin operating at full capacity. Helping them to quickly becoming confident, effective and profitable members of your team.

      3. Increased Employee Engagement

Providing a new starter with knowledge of how the organisation became what it is today, those who have shaped it and its vision for the future, enables staff to identify with the company and appreciate what it is they are representing. Staff which are aligned with the mission and values of your organisation are far more likely to be driven to achieve both personal and organisational success.

      4. Improved Staff Retention

Perhaps the most crucial benefit of a well-developed onboarding process is its role in the retention of staff. A thoughtful and relevant onboarding experience which helps new staff to assimilate and feel at home in their role within the organisation, is the first step in creating and retaining a workforce full of passionate, positive and high performing team members.
