How Colour Impacts eLearning
By
23 May 2019Designers take several psychological theories into consideration when creating e-learning courses to enhance their success. One such theory is the psychology of colours, with different colour having different psychological effects on the human brain.
1. Colours direct our attention to detail
Warm colours, particularly red, direct our attention to detail, causing learners to pay attention to detail and enabling them to better recall this information. Colour used to emphasise data grabs our attention, stimulates our visual sense and helps in remembering both facts and figures.
2. Colours improve readability
Colours can enhance readability by making information stand out, giving it more clarity. Concepts that are separated by colours become more logical, and clear reasoning automatically follows. This helps improve memory. Some of the most successful colour combinations are black on white, black on yellow and green on white.
3. Colours can be used based on their meaning
Whether consciously or unconsciously, we all apply significance to colours. For example, red usually stands for something important or dangerous. Red can also mean a mistake. Black usually stands for negativity, while white stands for purity, blue is related to waterbodies and green signifies flora.
