eLearning Bites: Why Learners Love Them
By
10 Oct 2019eLearning bites are short learning modules, usually ranging between 1 and 15 minutes in length, and focused on a singular topic or idea. These easily digested courses have quickly become recognised as the preferred training method for learners, with a recent survey from the Rapid Learning Institute showing that 94% of learning development professionals agree that their learners preferred the short form modules (Rapid Learning Institute, 2014)\r\n\r\nSuch a high preference for the learning style can be put down to a range of factors including;\r\n
Higher Engagement and Retention
\r\nThe short nature of a learning bite helps the learner to stay focused and engaged through out the course, addressing the biggest challenge of online training – disengagement. This is especially relevant to the younger work force who have become accustomed to shorter burst of information.\r\n\r\nFocusing on a single topic or idea within the learning bite also enables the learner to better absorb and retain information without confusion.\r\n
Greater Flexibility
\r\nThe short duration of the training piece means that a learner does not need to devote extended periods of time to learning. Training is flexible and can be fit in around other activities.\r\n\r\nThe shorter length also makes the training modules more mobile compatible than longer training alternatives as the smaller mobile display can make focusing for long periods of time challenging.\r\n
Easier Refresher Training
\r\nLearning bites enable a learner to quickly complete refresher training on a specific topic. Rather than completing an entire course to find information from just one section, the learner can quickly find and complete the learning bite only containing the relevant information.\r\n\r\nRapid Learning Institute 2014, RLI survey: Bite-size learning is hot at ASTD Conference, but execution is lagging back on the home front, Rapid Learning Institute, viewed 09 October 2019, <https://rapidlearninginstitute.com/news/rli-survey-bite-size-learning-hot-astd-conference-execution-lagging-back-home-front/>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n
